Discovery Channel has announced the return of its annual Shark Week programming event, which is scheduled to begin on Sunday, July 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The week-long television block will feature 20 premiere broadcasts distributed nightly across the network. The upcoming programming will utilize new tracking technology and scientific field investigations to study various apex predators.
The summer television schedule includes a mix of marine biologists, global explorers, and media personalities. On the opening night, actor Ken Jeong and recording artist REI AMI will host a program titled K-Pop Shark Heroes, which examines public perceptions of sharks off the Korean Peninsula. Head of content Joseph Boyle stated that the annual event relies on a combination of field science and cultural broadcast events.
Several programs will document specific research expeditions conducted across the United States coastline and international waters. The broadcast Air Jaws Red White and Breach will feature filmmaker Jeff Kurr and marine biologist Alison Towner investigating white shark activity in California. Additionally, a research team led by Dr. Craig O’Connell will investigate white shark and mako shark populations off the coast of New York and the Hamptons.
Additional field studies will feature investigations into distinct shark behaviors and environmental factors. Marine biologist Dr. Tristan Guttridge will lead multiple segments, including an experiment in New Zealand testing shark training capabilities and a study in the Strait of Gibraltar monitoring interactions between killer whales and great white sharks. In the Marshall Islands, researchers Phil Torres and Heather Amaro will investigate the potential impact of historical military nuclear testing on regional shark behavior.
The programming lineup concludes on Saturday, August 1, with segments focusing on migratory patterns and specific predatory physicalities. The broadcast titled Great White Highway will cover the increasing numbers of sharks traveling up the East Coast and the tracking systems used by researchers. The final premiere will feature scientist Dr. Craig O’Connell and marine biologist Aliah Banchik examining how thresher sharks utilize their tails to stun marine prey.
