HBO Max expands American Sign Language catalog with House of the Dragon release
HBO Max is expanding its American Sign Language options by adding dedicated performances to the drama series House of the Dragon. The rollout begins with the first season on May 29, followed by the second season on June 15. The upcoming third season will feature simultaneous ASL releases alongside standard broadcast episodes starting June 21 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
The platform is organizing production roles under Director of ASL Justin Jackerson, who previously worked on the ASL version of Wuthering Heights. The character lines for the first season are performed by Landen Gonzales. Sophia Morales handles the performance duties for the second season. Both individuals are scheduled to return for the third season production.
The additions build on a localized collection that began with the release of Barbie with ASL. According to platform data, that initial title accumulated over 9 million hours of streaming time. The service lists these additions as separate menu items on the main interface, marked by key art containing the official sign language symbol.
The strategy follows previous accessibility integrations on the platform, including the launch of The Last of Us with ASL and the movie Sinners, which released with a Black American Sign Language track. These features run alongside standard software configurations such as screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, and specialized color contrast options.
The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, focusing on the history of House Targaryen two centuries before the narrative of Game of Thrones. The production is managed by showrunner Ryan Condal alongside executive producers Sara Hess, Melissa Bernstein, and Kevin de la Noy. The upcoming third season features an ensemble cast including Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Steve Toussaint.
