The Smashing Pumpkins release anniversary vinyl editions for 35th birthday of Gish

The Smashing Pumpkins are marking the 35th anniversary of their debut album, Gish, with the release of new vinyl editions. Originally released on May 28, 1991, through Caroline Records, the record became one of the most commercially successful independent rock albums of that era.
The new anniversary reissues are available in two 180-gram formats. Independent record stores and Madame ZuZu’s, the Chicago teahouse owned by front man Billy Corgan, will carry the releases.
One version features a limited-edition colorway pressed on grey vinyl with pink and purple splatter designed to match the original 1991 packaging artwork. A standard black vinyl edition is also available.
The band recorded the 10-track album with producer Butch Vig at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin. Combining elements of rock, metal, psychedelia, pop, and shoegaze, the debut eventually achieved Platinum certification and established the foundation for the band’s subsequent commercial success.
Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin stated that the album represents the manifestation of the band’s early hopes, dreams, and abilities. He noted that it offers listeners an inside look at the period that defined the group.
The Gish vinyl release follows several other recent archival projects from the band. Last year, the group marked the 30th anniversary of their 1995 Diamond-certified album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, with a deluxe vinyl reissue and a special performance with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The band also recently issued a 25th anniversary version of Machina/The Machines of God.
Outside of the band’s archival releases, Corgan has stayed active with independent projects. His podcast, The Magnificent Others, is in its second year and recently hosted conversations with Courtney Love, Billy Idol, Nancy Wilson, and Yungblud. Additionally, as president of the National Wrestling Alliance, Corgan finalized a broadcasting deal to bring the promotion back to free television on Comet TV.
The Smashing Pumpkins are also scheduled to begin their North American Rats in a Cage tour this September. The tour follows their first appearance at Lollapalooza since 1994 and will run through November.
Concerts on the upcoming tour will feature two distinct sets. The band will perform one set dedicated entirely to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, followed by a career-spanning set covering music from Gish through their 2024 album, Aghori Mhori Mei.
