Grateful Dead to release 50th anniversary remaster of Steal Your Face

A newly remastered version of the Grateful Dead’s 1976 double-live album, Steal Your Face, is scheduled to arrive on June 26 to mark the record’s 50th anniversary.
The album captures performances from the band’s historic five-show “farewell” run at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in October 1974. These shows marked the beginning of an indefinite touring hiatus and served as the final stand for the “Wall of Sound,” a 75-ton modular PA system that revolutionized live audio before becoming logistically unsustainable.
The Steal Your Face (50th Anniversary Remaster) was sourced from Plangent Processes restored tapes and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser. The physical release includes a 2LP set featuring the band’s official Pantone colors, “Grateful Red” and “Stealie Blue,” with custom center labels and a sticker sheet.

The tracklist balances staples like “U.S. Blues” and “Promised Land” with selections from band members’ solo projects. A remastered version of “Black-Throated Wind,” originally from Bob Weir’s 1972 solo album Ace, was released digitally today as a preview of the collection.
“A staple of the live repertoire 1972-1974, thankfully returning in 1990, Black-Throated Wind is widely considered one of Bob Weir’s finest compositions,” said David Lemieux, Grateful Dead legacy manager and audio archivist. “Never recorded on a Grateful Dead studio album… this is the definitive Grateful Dead recording of this gem.”
At the time of the recordings, the lineup featured Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Keith Godchaux, and Donna Jean Godchaux. The original 1976 release of Steal Your Face coincided with the band’s return to the road following their 20-month hiatus.
The anniversary edition is currently available for pre-order and will be released across digital platforms and in specialized vinyl variants via Dead.net.
