Bertoia Auctions held its Automobilia Sale on Aug. 28, featuring items from the David Bausch collection along with pieces from other consignors. The 550-lot event offered a variety of automotive history, including posters, porcelain signs, statuary, and early luxury vehicles.
A hand-painted bronze sculpture by Stanley Wanlass titled Passing of the Horse served as the top-selling item, realizing $34,800 against a $24,000 high estimate. Four other bronze sculptures by Wanlass featuring automotive themes placed among the nine highest-selling lots in the auction.
A dark green 1929 Franklin Series 11 sedan surpassed its pre-sale expectations by selling for $13,200. Related automobilia also performed strongly, highlighted by a 1920s porcelain Franklin Motor Cars service station sign that brought $10,200.
An Art Deco bronzed pewter lamp depicting an allegorical female holding a biplane sold for $10,200, beating its $2,500 high estimate. A sterling and gold scale model of the 1903 Model A Ford, produced by the American Silversmiths Guild in 1978, fetched $9,000.
Rare automotive posters attracted high bids, including an Eliott-signed Voiturette IVRY advertising poster that reached $7,200. A Michelin poster titled Le Pneu Michelin a Vaincu le Rail sold for $5,400, while a lithographic print by William Harnden Foster finished at $4,500.
Decorative items from the Bausch collection included a French porcelain figural lamp featuring two motorists, which brought $6,000. A Roseville pottery planter in the Tourist pattern brought $4,800, and an enameled aviation panel cigarette case realized $3,000.
A silver-plated enameled cigarette case with a sailboat graphic sold for $3,000. The sale also featured Japanese tinplate toys from the Lenny Hummel Collection, including a boxed Ichiko 1967 Cadillac Eldorado friction toy that brought $1,140.
