The long-running Broadway musical Chicago has cast South Korean pop vocalist Ivy to step into the role of Roxie Hart later this summer. The guest residency is strictly scheduled as a three-week engagement, opening on Monday, August 17, and running through Sunday, September 6.
Performances will take place on the stage of the Ambassador Theatre, located at 219 West 49th Street in New York City. The production stands as the longest-running active musical on Broadway and holds the record as the number one longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Following the conclusion of her limited New York run, Ivy will transition back to Seoul, South Korea, where she is set to appear at the LG Arts Center Theatre starting Saturday, December 5.
Known formally as Eun-Hye Park, Ivy comes to the role with a background spanning numerous South Korean stage productions. Her previous theater credits include roles in Wicked, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Aida, Ghost the Musical, and Jekyll & Hyde, alongside a variety of dramatic plays and television projects. Her career honors feature the 2018 Yegrin Musical Award for Best Leading Actress and the 2012 Korea Musical Award for Best New Actress, alongside multiple national pop music titles dating back to 2005.
The character she will portray, Roxie Hart, is a 1920s nightclub dancer who kills her lover and utilizes a slick criminal lawyer to manipulate the media and public opinion. The musical features music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. The ongoing Broadway revival, produced by Barry and Fran Weissler under executive producer Alecia Parker, won six Tony Awards in 1997, including Best Musical Revival.
The show has maintained an extensive presence in South Korea since its localized premiere over two decades ago. According to Park Myung-Sung, the producer of the Korean licensed production, Chicago has logged approximately 1,700 performances and reached an estimated 1.8 million audience members in the country since launching in 2000.
The current Broadway ensemble also features Rachel Schur, Sophie Carmen-Jones, Nik Walker, Jacqueline B. Arnold, Greg Hildreth, and J. Workman. The production is directed by Walter Bobbie with choreography by Ann Reinking. Box office ticket sales are available on-site at the Ambassador Theatre throughout the week, as well as online through the official production website.
