Sony has announced the FE 100-400mm f/5.6-8 OSS lens, a new super telephoto zoom designed for sports and wildlife photographers. The lightweight E-mount camera lens weighs 23.1 ounces and carries a retail price of $848.
The lens features an optical design that includes one aspherical element and two extra-low dispersion elements to minimize distortion and chromatic aberration. Built with dust and moisture resistance, the unit also incorporates Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for handheld shooting and a rounded 9-blade diaphragm.
Equipped with two linear motors, the lens supports continuous autofocus and auto-exposure tracking up to 120 frames per second on compatible high-speed camera bodies like the Sony a9 III. It is also compatible with both 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, extending the maximum focal reach up to 800mm.
Additional physical features include a zoom lock switch to prevent unwanted lens barrel extension. The compact release follows Sony’s earlier announcement of the larger G Master 100-400mm f/4.5 lens, providing a smaller, lower-cost telephoto option.
B&H has published a First Look video covering the new lens on its YouTube channel, alongside detailed product information on its Explora editorial platform.
