Metallica has issued a remastered edition of the band’s quadruple-platinum seventh studio album, ReLoad, through its independent label Blackened Recordings. Reuben Cohen remastered the audio tracks at Lurssen Mastering under the direct supervision of producer Greg Fidelman. The release is distributed across multiple consumer formats including a limited-edition box set, standard heavy-weight vinyl, compact discs, cassette tapes, and modern spatial digital audio files.
The premium physical configuration is a numbered limited-edition deluxe box set containing a collection of materials documenting the 1997 and 1998 era of the band. The package contains a double vinyl printing of the core album, a special seven-inch vinyl for The Memory Remains, and a live performance recorded at the Ministry of Sound in 1997. The box set also bundles 15 compact discs of archival material alongside four video discs capturing studio sessions, live shows, and regional television appearances.
Historical documentation and collectibles are integrated directly into the physical release format. The package contains a 128-page book featuring historical essays and unreleased photographs taken during the original recording timeline. Additional contents inside the limited box include replica tour laminates, lyric sheets, a poster, custom instrument picks, and promotional art prints.
The retail release coincides with a structured online fan cover competition utilizing the designated hashtag GetTheReLoadOut on social media networks. This year the digital event expanded beyond instrumental covers to include submissions from visual and performance artists. Grand prize recipients chosen at the end of the promotional cycle will receive a copy of the box set autographed by the band members.
The original studio album debuted at the top position of the Billboard 200 chart when it first launched on November 18, 1997. The creative tracking sessions featured musicians James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Jason Newsted recording at The Plant studio facility in Sausalito, California. The original studio sessions yielded prominent tracks like Fuel and featured unique instruments including a hurdy-gurdy and guest vocals from Marianne Faithfull.
