Rhino will release a cross-label career retrospective honoring the 100th anniversary of jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane. The collection, titled Coltrane 100, brings together recordings licensed across Prestige, Blue Note, Atlantic, Columbia, and Impulse! to cover his work from 1951 through 1967.
The retrospective arrives on October 2 in multiple physical configurations remastered by Bernie Grundman. The flagship offering is a six-LP audiophile vinyl boxed set pressed on 180-gram vinyl that includes a 12-page booklet and liner notes by scholar Ben Ratliff, while a curated two-LP and single-CD edition titled Coltrane 100 Highlights will launch concurrently.
The track selections document Coltrane’s early career as a sideman performing alongside Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Duke Ellington. The collection also captures his work as a bandleader, including recordings of Blue Train, Giant Steps, My Favorite Things, and A Love Supreme, Pt. 1: Acknowledgement.
The release anchors a broader series of centennial events, beginning with a listening event hosted by The Record Club at Public Records in Brooklyn. Additional listening sessions organized by Pitchblack Playback are planned in select cities during his birthday week from September 21 through September 25.
Live events tied to the anniversary include performances by the Ravi Coltrane Quartet at the Blue Note in Los Angeles from September 22 through September 24. On September 23, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts will host a book panel, while the Hollywood Bowl presents a symphony performance featuring saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin.
