The HBO original three-part documentary series A Killer Story will premiere on Thursday, September 10, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, with streaming available on HBO Max. New episodes of the limited series will air on subsequent Thursdays in the same time slot.
Directed by Matthew Galkin and executive produced by Joshua Levine, the documentary focuses on the 2002 double homicide of Mike Sisco and Karen Harkness in Topeka, Kansas, and the subsequent prosecution of Dana Chandler. Filmed over six years, the project follows investigative journalist Joe Sexton as he examines the case alongside citizen sleuths Eileen and Keen Umbehr.
The first episode, “Welcome to Topeka,” debuts September 10 and details Chandler’s initial arrest and conviction for the murders of her ex-husband and his girlfriend. The initial conviction is later overturned on appeal with assistance from the Umbehrs, who maintain Chandler’s innocence.
The second installment, “Person of Interest,” airs September 17 and centers on the subsequent retrial, where the defense points toward an alternate suspect while a surprise witness testifies for the prosecution. The finale, “A Dangerous Notion,” airs September 24 and covers a hung jury, a third trial where Chandler represents herself, and the eventual legal outcome.
A Killer Story is produced by Story Syndicate in association with Concordia Studio and Fairhaven.
