Carly Simon will release a new 12-track studio album titled Comes in Waves on August 14. The project represents her first collection of original songs since 2008. The material was written and recorded primarily at the musician’s residence located on Martha’s Vineyard.
The album’s opening track and initial single, “Howl,” was co-written and produced alongside David Spencer. The track features a lyrical narrative that transitions from themes of anger and betrayal toward an eventual resolution of forgiveness. Spencer’s prior production work spans various media platforms including film, television, pop, country, and Christian music.
The album title itself is derived from a specific track titled “Slowly,” which focuses on the concepts of patience and emotional renewal. Lyrically, the song utilizes the metaphor of a rising and receding tide to establish the central theme of the record. The collection addresses recurring subjects from Simon’s career, including memory, family, self-reckoning, and emotional evolution.
The production of the album involved a circle of family members, friends, and long-term professional collaborators. The tracks feature musical contributions from John Forté, whose participation occurred prior to his passing earlier this year. Simon’s son, Ben Taylor, assisted throughout the project as a songwriter, producer, musician, and vocalist, while her daughter, Sally Taylor, provided vocals and designed the artwork for the single.
Producer Paul Samwell-Smith returned to work on the project, revisiting and reworking the song “Share the End,” which he originally produced for Simon’s 1971 album Anticipation. Producer and engineer Frank Filipetti also acted as a primary collaborator in shaping the direction of the new music. The upcoming release will be distributed through standard retail and streaming channels.
