The San Diego Rose Society will host the San Diego World Rose Symposium from April 30 to May 4, 2027, at the Bahia Resort Hotel on Mission Bay. The event honors the society’s 100th anniversary and will showcase botanists, master hybridizers and expert rosarians from around the world.
The five-day symposium will also include the 2027 American Rose Society Convention and the 2027 National Rose Show. The show will feature competitions for roses, arrangements and photography, and attendees can exhibit or watch. Symposium co-chair Ruth Tiffany said it is the first time in 25 years that a World Federation of Rose Societies Convention has been held in the United States.
The educational lineup includes master hybridizers Tom Carruth, who has created more than 100 rose varieties, including 11 All-America Rose Selections, and Ping Lim, a breeder of eco-friendly, stress-resistant roses. Other speakers will cover chemical-free rose growing, integrated pest management, rose selection for changing climates, heritage roses, and new cultivars.
Attendees can take optional tours of San Diego gardens, including the 37-acre San Diego Botanic Garden, which has more than 5,000 plant species and four miles of trails. Another stop is the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden in Balboa Park, home to 1,600 roses and 130 varieties. Tours will also visit several of the region’s private rose gardens.
A rare rose auction will give in-person attendees the chance to take home heirloom and hard-to-find rose plants. The society will also mark its centennial with a 1927-themed American Rose Society Awards Dinner.
The Bahia Resort Hotel sits on a 14-acre peninsula on Mission Bay and has a secluded beach and tropical gardens. It is a 10-minute walk from Pacific Beach’s Belmont Park and nearby beachfront restaurants, according to symposium co-chair Natalie Stout.
The symposium will close with an optional eight-day tour designed by rose expert Paul Zimmerman. The tour will visit estates, public gardens and nurseries in Southern and Central California. Registration, details and discounted hotel rates are available at sandiegorosesociety.com/2027.
