HBO documentary short on former Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart debuts Oct. 27

HBO will debut the documentary short “Kordell Stewart / Slash & Burn” on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 9 p.m. to 9:40 p.m. ET and PT. The film will also be available to stream on HBO Max.

The film looks at former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart, who was nicknamed “Slash” for his ability to play multiple positions. HBO says Stewart helped redefine what was possible for an NFL quarterback in the 1990s. The film also follows a rumor that upended his life and followed him for decades, and it examines the personal toll of scrutiny beyond the football field.

Brian Rivera, who also directed “WWE: Unreal,” directed, produced and edited the film. It features interviews with Stewart, former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, former running back Jerome Bettis and former assistant coach Mike Mularkey. Pittsburgh broadcaster Bob Pompeani and journalist LZ Granderson also appear.

The film is the latest in “NFL Shorts,” a collection of short documentaries made with NFL Films about stories connected to football. Earlier installments include “The Shuffle,” a Sports Emmy-nominated short about the 1985 Chicago Bears’ rap anthem. The most recent installment, “Miller Night Football,” looked at Dennis Miller’s time in the Monday Night Football broadcast booth.

The film is a Skydance Sports presentation and an NFL Films production.
