NPG Records has released Calabama, a four-track digital EP from Prince that expands on the posthumous album Timeless. The release includes the album version of “Calabama,” an unedited version titled “Calabama (Vault Raw),” and two unreleased tracks titled “Prince And The Band (Vault Raw 1)” and “Prince And The Band (Vault Raw 2).”
The EP offers listeners a direct comparison between the Timeless album track, which incorporated posthumously recorded horns by Greg Boyer, Adrian Crutchfield, and Lynn Grissett, and the original unedited recording. Prince recorded “Calabama” on January 21, 2003, at Paisley Park with drummer John Blackwell, performing all other instrumentation and production himself. The two bonus tracks, recorded with sound engineer Ian Boxill, showcase Prince performing alongside his band without subsequent edits.
In addition to the audio release, new lyric videos for select songs from Timeless have premiered on YouTube. Selected unedited recordings from the Vault are also slated for archival display at Paisley Park in 2027 to provide visitors with further context regarding his recording methods.
The EP follows the August 28 release of Timeless, which entered the Billboard 200 at number 59 and reached top ten positions on national sales charts in Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Italy, Austria, Canada, the Netherlands, France, and Japan. A global livestream event supporting the release has generated over 173,000 views on YouTube and Facebook, alongside the release of a music video for the 2007 recording “The Guilty Ones.”
Prince was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Operating out of his Paisley Park complex in Chanhassen, Minnesota, he released over 39 albums throughout his career and earned inductions into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
