National nonprofit organization Paws of War has launched the Humane Warriors Initiative, an effort to rescue horses from the slaughter pipeline, provide medical rehabilitation, and pair the animals with veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders through equine therapy.
The program includes three main components: the Frontline Heroes Initiative, an effort to combat horse slaughter, and the At Ease wellness program. Under the Frontline Heroes Initiative, rescued horses receive medical care before being paired with military personnel and first responders.
Although horse slaughter was banned within the United States in 2007, an estimated 100,000 American horses are transported annually to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, where horse meat is exported to countries including France, Italy, Japan, and Belgium. Slaughter buyers purchase horses for approximately $500 to $1,000 each depending on weight.
The issue remains active in federal policy. Congress is currently considering the Save America’s Forgotten Equine (SAFE) Act to prohibit the slaughter, transport, sale, or donation of horses and mules for human consumption, alongside discussions surrounding farm bill legislation regarding domestic slaughter regulations.
The initiative’s At Ease wellness program provides specialized support for female military members, incorporating rescued horses into equine therapy alongside outdoor activities and wellness practices. The organization has already rescued several horses under the program in upstate New York, including one horse that has been paired with a veteran.
