Beyond Type 1 joined forces with the San Diego Padres, the Padres Foundation, and the King of the Hill Foundation to host a free type 1 diabetes screening and education event at Petco Park on August 1. Supported by Dexcom, the event aimed to increase awareness surrounding early detection and help families identify risk before medical emergencies occur.
The event, titled No Curveballs: Rally for Type 1 Diabetes Early Detection, brought in over 800 attendees. More than 200 eligible participants completed a blood test to check for diabetes-related autoantibodies, which can indicate an elevated risk of developing the condition before symptoms appear.
Results from the screening will be sent to participants in approximately four to six weeks. Beyond Type 1 will also provide follow-up educational materials and support resources to those who were screened.
The initiative follows findings from a recent survey commissioned by Sanofi regarding risk awareness among families with a history of the disease. While individuals with an immediate family member face a higher likelihood of developing type 1 diabetes, roughly 90% of those diagnosed have no known family history of the condition.
The event included a panel discussion featuring athletes and advocates living with type 1 diabetes and their families. Panelists shared personal diagnosis stories, discussed family support systems, and emphasized the role of early screening in health management.
