Karol G makes history as first Latina to headline Coachella

Global superstar Karol G delivered a landmark performance Sunday night, becoming the first Latina artist to headline the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in its 27-year history.
The Colombian singer, born Carolina Giraldo Navarro, used her headlining slot to celebrate Latin identity and feminine strength through a conceptually driven show that blended traditional Colombian elements with modern reggaeton and pop.
“I am Carolina from Medellín, Colombia, and today I am the first Latina woman to headline Coachella,” she told the capacity crowd. “This is not just about me; this is about my Latino community. This is for my Latinos that have been struggling in this country lately. We stand for them.”

The performance, titled a “journey of transformation,” featured a stage design inspired by the wild and untamed spirit of womanhood. The set opened with the gaita hembra, a traditional Colombian woodwind instrument, and featured a visual narrative centered on the macaw, a symbol of Latin American diversity and freedom.
Creative director and choreographer Parris Goebel led the visual production, which transitioned from towering rock formations into a glowing, quartz-like oasis.
The historic set included several high-profile guest appearances. Reggaeton pioneer Wisin performed a medley of hits, while Becky G joined for “MAMIII” and Mariah Angeliq appeared for “EL MAKINON.” The performance also featured legendary Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and a surprise appearance by Greg Gonzalez of Cigarettes After Sex, who played guitar on a previously unreleased track.
The set marked a cultural milestone for the festival and the global music industry, reflecting the continued dominance of Latin artists on the world stage. Karol G is scheduled to return to the desert for a second headlining performance this coming Sunday.
