Coney Island USA will present the second annual Pee-wee Herman Universe Look-Alike Competition on Sunday, August 23, in Brooklyn. The gathering honors the birthday of actor Paul Reubens and pays tribute to his famous comedic character, Pee-wee Herman.
Sign-ups start at noon in the Freak Bar at 1208 Surf Avenue. The official contest begins at 2:00 p.m. nearby along West 12th Street.
Artistic Director Adam Rinn and performance artist Little Brooklyn will co-host and co-produce the gathering. A panel of celebrity judges will decide the winners and present Coney Island-themed awards across four distinct categories.
Participants can compete for best Pee-wee Herman or dress as figures from the television series Pee-wee’s Playhouse, including Miss Yvonne, Captain Carl, Cowboy Curtis, Reba the Mail-lady, Jambi, or the King of Cartoons. Another division covers characters from feature films like Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Big Top Pee-wee, and Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.
A new addition to the lineup this year is the Pee-wee Pet category, which permits owners to enter animals into the costume show.
The host organization, Coney Island USA, resides in a landmarked building that also houses the Coney Island Circus Sideshow and the Coney Island Museum.
