The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf will open a permanent exhibition titled Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience on Sept. 12, 2026. Located on the waterfront in Mobile, Alabama, the 6,000-square-foot installation explores Buffett’s life as a musician, author, sailor, pilot, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.
The exhibit features more than 130 artifacts, many of which have never been publicly displayed before. Items on view include his 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame statue, handwritten lyrics, personal scrapbooks, and the 12-string Martin guitar used to perform Son of a Son of a Sailor.
Visitors can view unreleased concert footage, personal photographs, and a recreation of Shrimp Boat Sound, Buffett’s Key West recording studio. The installation also incorporates exclusive interviews with family members, bandmates, crew members, and business associates who knew him.
The location sits across the Mobile River from where Buffett’s parents worked at the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co., with the museum also preserving artifacts connected to his grandfather’s maritime history. The exhibit draws on two years of research, archival materials, and personal collections gathered by the museum team.
Opening weekend events begin Sept. 11 with a performance by Mac McAnally and Scotty Emerick at the Saenger Theater. The public opening on Sept. 12 includes the unveiling of a bronze Jimmy Buffett sculpture, live music, and a mural festival in Cooper Riverside Park.
