Rhino High Fidelity has released a limited audiophile reel-to-reel tape edition of Joni Mitchell’s 1974 album Court and Spark. The release features her sixth studio album, which marked a transition toward jazz-influenced arrangements and became the most commercially successful recording of her career.

The physical tape was duplicated in real time from a 1:1 copy of the original stereo master tape to preserve the dynamic range of the original recording. The release is produced on premium RTM LPR90 tape stock on a 10.5-inch metal reel, running at 15 inches per second using the IEC equalization standard.

Court and Spark features musical contributions from the jazz-fusion group L.A. Express, composed of Tom Scott, Max Bennett, Larry Carlton, Joe Sample, and John Guerin. Their collaboration introduced ensemble-driven instrumentation to Mitchell’s established folk and pop writing style.

Originally released on January 17, 1974, the album reached number two on the charts, achieved double Platinum status, and spawned her top ten single “Help Me” alongside tracks featuring guitarist Robbie Robertson. The recording received four Grammy Award nominations, winning for the arrangement of “Down To You,” and earned induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004.

The reel-to-reel package is limited to 350 copies worldwide through Rhino High Fidelity. The label specializes in audiophile catalog reissues from Warner Music across multiple genres, utilizing archival packaging and master-quality sound reproductions.
