Christian artist Greg Olsen and Shadow Mountain Publishing released “Greg Olsen: The Complete Paintings” on Tuesday. It is the most comprehensive collection of his work ever published. The full-color volume gathers more than 300 pieces from a 50-year career.
The book reaches back to Olsen’s earliest drawings and moves through the works that defined his career, including “O Jerusalem,” “Gentle Healer,” “Worlds Without End” and “As I Have Loved You.” It also features never-before-published sketches, studies and personal pieces. The stories and symbolism behind both his best-known images and lesser-seen works are included.
Olsen said seeing so much of his work in one place is both nostalgic and humbling. “It makes me feel nostalgic and at the same time oddly vulnerable,” Olsen said. He compared it to looking through an old photo album.
Rather than run explanatory text beside every painting, Olsen gave that space back to the images. “I’m so pleased that we were able to show all the images in full color,” he said.
Olsen said he hopes readers come away with a sense of the road behind the paintings. “My hope is that anyone who takes time to peruse this book will get a sense of me, where I come from, and of the journey I’ve been on for the last 50 years,” Olsen said. He also challenged readers to find a few images to pause and ponder on.
“Greg Olsen: The Complete Paintings” is available in all formats wherever books are sold.
Olsen was raised in a farming community in rural Idaho. His art is held in institutions including the Pentagon, the NCAA Hall of Fame and the U.S. Forest Service. After a 1988 trip to Jerusalem, he turned increasingly to Christian art, and in 1993 he signed a deal with Mill Pond Press that brought his work into the national spotlight.
