Boston-based DIY indie rock band Gollylagging has released their latest single, “Red Fish,” accompanied by a music video directed and edited by bassist Joey Lorant. The track serves as a preview for the band’s upcoming 10-track debut album, Real Life, which drops on Oct. 16 via Disposable America.
Vocalist and guitarist Jake Regulbuto wrote the playful, sarcastic track as a response to social interactions where people seemed overly focused on being cool. Lorant drew visual inspiration for the music video from late 1990s and early 2000s videos by artists including the Beastie Boys, The Pharcyde, and The Lonely Island.
Real Life features contributions from all four band members, including dual vocalists Regulbuto and Jules Skiffington alongside drummer Andrew Garas and Lorant. The album addresses themes of accepting difficult life circumstances, breaking repetitive patterns, and dealing with fractured friendships.
The debut record follows previously released singles “Bronco,” “Comet,” and “Jackknife,” as well as earlier projects including the 2023 split EP Fauna and 2024’s Dry Rot. The band has built its presence performing across New England venues and local events like the Something in the Way Festival and NICE festival.
Gollylagging has several Massachusetts live dates scheduled, starting with appearances at Sour City Tapes Fest on Oct. 2 and Boston Fuzzstival on Oct. 3. The group will host a movie screening of Albert Brooks’ 1976 film Real Life at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge on Oct. 15, followed by an official album release show with Jonny Tex and Bus Crush in Medford on Nov. 19.
