HBO renews Steve Carell comedy ‘Rooster’ for second season

HBO has renewed its new comedy series “Rooster” for a second season following strong viewership and critical reception, the network announced.
Starring Steve Carell, the series has averaged 5.8 million U.S. viewers through its first four episodes. According to HBO, the show is pacing as the network’s most-watched freshman comedy in more than a decade. The 10-episode first season is currently airing on Sundays, with the finale scheduled for May 10.
“It’s been heartening to feel the audience embrace ‘Rooster,’ as we did when we first saw Steve, Bill and Matt bring this character to life,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming. Gravitt noted that the upcoming season will focus on the central character’s spring semester.
Set on a college campus, the series centers on a complicated relationship between an author, played by Carell, and his daughter, played by Charly Clive. The ensemble cast includes Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai.
The series is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Television and Doozer Productions. It is executive produced by Carell alongside co-showrunners Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses.
“‘Rooster’ is a heartfelt, endearing series, and its second-season renewal is richly deserved,” said Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs at Warner Bros. Television. “Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses are masters of their craft, bringing their signature heart and humor to life through an incredible cast.”
Episodes of “Rooster” air on HBO and are available for streaming on Max.
