The Mountain Goats have announced the upcoming release of their new studio album, titled Days, which is scheduled to debut on August 7 through Cadmean Dawn Records. The project initially grew out of a concept for an album called Grunges, which was envisioned as a sequel to the band’s previous release, Goths. Principal songwriter John Darnielle began writing the material following a social media joke about composing a track centered around Pearl Jam.

The songwriting process developed significantly over a subsequent two-week period while Darnielle’s wife was away at a residency in Virginia. The resulting collection of music focuses loosely on the decades of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. According to Darnielle, the tracks explore the passage of time and the shifting clarity of personal memories as they recede.

Musically, the majority of the songs on the album are written in major keys despite the underlying lyrical themes. John Congleton produced the recording sessions at Sear Sound, a production facility located in Manhattan that is managed by Roberta Findlay. The studio tracking sessions brought together a varied group of collaborative musicians and vocalists.

The instrumentals feature Rob Jost contributing performances on both the bass and the French horn. The vocal arrangements include group backing vocals from Catherine Russell, Jamie Leonhart, and Carolyn Leonhart. Additionally, Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer provided layered backing vocals for a specific track titled “Hidden Majesty of Later Venom Albums.”

The production also incorporates guest appearances from longtime musical colleagues on select songs. Matt Nathanson contributed vocal parts to the track “Candlebox,” while Mikaela Davis added harp instrumentation to the song “Going to Fennario.” The band will support the new album release with an extensive world tour running through the end of 2026.
