Los Angeles-based indie duo The Army, The Navy has released “Down Debbie/Reservoir,” marking the final single ahead of their upcoming debut album. The full 11-track project, titled Fake Brave Life, is scheduled for release on June 12 through Independent Co.

The new single utilizes a lush arrangement of strings and R&B elements to explore the personal tension between a desire for deep connection and the instinct for self-protection. Musicians Sasha Goldberg and Maia Ciambriello wrote the track from a place of self-awareness, drawing on their shared experiences of love and loss.

Goldberg and Ciambriello originally grew up in the Bay Area near the foothills of Mount Tamalpais, but the duo formally took shape while they were undergraduate songwriting students at Loyola University in New Orleans. As roommates, they initially developed songs individually before combining their respective ideas. Today, the duo continues this collaborative writing practice from their shared residence in Los Angeles, collecting lyrics in a clothbound notebook they refer to as “the Bible.”

Fake Brave Life transitions the band’s sound from their earlier spare productions into a full studio setup. The duo recorded the album in Athens, Georgia, and New York City alongside producers Drew Vandenberg and Mikey Freedom Hart. The studio sessions integrated session musicians and a string quartet to build out the instrumental scaffolding. While some tracks are newly developed, other songs on the tracklist originated during their time as students in New Orleans.

The album follows the duo’s 2024 extended plays, Fruit for Flies and Sugar for Bugs, as well as their 2023 single “Vienna (In Memorium).” The band previously supported acts such as Joy Crookes, Dora Jar, Paris Paloma, and Matt Maltese, and sold out the majority of their headlining Gentle Hellraiser tour.

Following the June album release, The Army, The Navy is scheduled to support Lord Huron on tour dates this July. The duo will also perform at the Lollapalooza festival this August.
